1 Timothy 2: 11-15: NT Wright provides context

ntwrightofficefinal1NT Wright provides insight into the context of 1 Timothy 2: 11-15,

detailing how the letter was written to the Church of Ephesus, and how it relates to allowing women to study as the disciples did, under Jesus.  "...Let a woman learn in silence" describes the study of the word, as Saul of Tarsus (later the apostle Paul) did under Gamaliel, and Mary did under Jesus (of the Mary & Martha story).

1 Timothy 2:11-15 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) : 11 Let a woman[a] learn in silence with full submission. 12 I permit no woman[b] to teach or to have authority over a man;[c] she is to keep silent. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing, provided they continue in faith and love and holiness, with modesty.
