The 2006 movie “Mother Teresa” starring Olivia Hussey as Mother Teresa should not be confused with other similarly named productions made over the years. This one is a compelling portrayal of one of the most incredible Christians of our time.
The movie begins in 1946 as she begins to care for the sick, and orphans of Calcutta. The plot moves through her founding of the Missionaries of Charity as they struggle with financial hardships, and government officials who fear she is covertly attempting to convert people to Christianity. The movie highlights her receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. In a scene from a 1995 during corporate meeting of her organization, she realizes that the Missionaries of Charity have strayed from the simplicity of their original mission and need to return to focus on the needs of the impoverished. In frail health most of her life, she served with an unconditional love for the poor until her death in 1997.This movie is unequivocally Christian. She could not have accomplished what she did without the commitment and fortitude of knowing God’s will. It emphasizes the need and power of prayer. It illustrates how one person can motivate others to recognize God’s will to use their given talents to transform the world around them.
