In the foreword to Prayers from the Heart, compiled by Richard Foster, the author describes his aim to live “as a portable sanctuary”, experiencing each moment as a sacrament, so God can live as completely in and through him as possible. To assist in this journey, Foster compiled prayers that he hopes will “usher us into the loving heart of God.” He arranges the prayers into three journeys (inward, upward and outward), with a variety of guides, ranging from St. Francis of Assisi, Evelyn Underhill, Mother Teresa, Alan Paton, A.W. Tozer and Christina Rosetti, among others.

 

Prayer is the path for a rich and rewarding relationship with our Father, taking us on journeys that captivate our attention and stimulate our mind with new and deeper understandings of who He is and what He has in store for us. As signposts give travelers a brief indication of what is ahead, these prayers provide brief outlines for our extended conversations with God. As we engage with the Father our mind and spirit are guided by Christ’s mind and Spirit, blessedly reshaping us into His portable sanctuary where every moment is experienced as a sacrament.
