alvin_straightAlvin's story reminds us of the importance of family relationships, the need for unconditional love, and the power of forgiveness. Alvin Straight, a 73-year old resident of Laurens, Iowa decides to visit his estranged brother Lyle in Mount Zion, Wisconsin after learning he had suffered a stroke. But Alvin had no driver's license and refused to be driven, fly, or take a bus. Being a cantankerous World War II veteran who still mowed his lawn, Alvin decided to outfit a makeshift trailer, and drive his lawnmower the 300-plus miles across state lines. Alvin went to great effort in overcoming the many challenges during his unorthodox trip to reach s brother, but he eventually reached his destination.

The real-life Straight Story (1999) is a G-rated and thought-provoking adult orientated movie, which is based on the actual journey. While the film’s deliberate pacing may seem slow to some, Alvin’s encounters with people along the way furnish food for thought about the truly important things of life. “The Straight Story” is a wonderful film for everyone, making this a must-see for the entire family. The 1999 G-rated movie is directed by David Lynch. Veteran character actor Richard Farnsworth plays the role of a lifetime as Alvin Straight.
