This 1958 movie is a true-life classic movie based on the life of Gladys Aylward who became a missionary in China during the years leading up to WWII.

Turned down by the China Missionary Society as “not qualified”, she goes to China on her own. She displays certainty of God’s will for her life. Ingrid Bergman plays Gladys and Curt Jurgens as Lin Nan, a Eurasian Colonel with a Chinese mother and Dutch father, who later in the movie becomes her love interest.

As a sincere and committed Christian she slowly but convincingly impresses everyone with whom she comes into contact. Her compassionate enthusiasm as a foot inspector, prison advocate and caregiver to orphans wins her the name Jen Ai, "The One Who Loves People".

As the war closes in she must lead her 100 orphans to safety on foot through the mountains to a safe city for evacuation. The missionary who meets them turns out to be the same Dr. Robinson (Moultrie Kelsall) who told her she was “simply not qualified” to be a missionary. Today’s emphasis on education, and training often overlooks the “qualifications” displayed in this movie to be a Christian witness.
