Loosening the Bonds of Injustice

slaverymonument2Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Isaiah 58

What is our responsibility to those who are oppressed, to  those  who are brutally mistreated, denied their legal rights, and treated  as less than  human? PBS aired an  American  Experience special May 16 on the Freedom Riders, members of CORE who in 1961 rode through  the deep south to protest the racial injustice that was being perpetrated against African Americans. Sharing the Word

Below is a clip from a movie, entitled Wycliffe, about one of the more extraordinary, and yet little-known, Christians. Simply put, he believed what the Bible said, and lived his life according to the gospel.  John Wycliffe, a 14th century reformer whose life was devoted to living the word of God, and spreading the good news about Christ throughout England. He was a professor at Oxford, but ran into trouble with the Catholic church when he wrote and preached against the enormous wealth the church held throughout the world. Wycliffe (also spelled Wyclif) proposed selling most of the lands and giving the proceeds to the poor.

An excellent resource, and also an interesting perspective on Wycliffe, is none other than the online Catholic Encyclopedia.
