Paradigm Spirituality

mtnscp9goodBelow is a daily devotional from Joni Eareckson Tada.

He Hideth My Soul

One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; He will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock. Psalm 27:4‑5

Fanny Crosby suffered much as a blind person living in the 19th century - she wrote that she often found solace in the book of Psalms. Miss Crosby especially liked those psalms which pointed her to the future, encouraging her to hold on tightly for heaven was just around the corner.

She needed that reminder - she realized her physical limitations exposed her to powerful emotions which, if left unattended, could sway her faith.  When she leaned on the Psalms, she found them to be a wellspring of inspiration, and they provided the basis for many of her 6,000 hymns.  Psalm 27 was, in fact, the inspiration for:

He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock

That shadows a dry, thirsty land;

He hideth my life in the depths of His love,

And covers me there with His hand

And covers me there with His hand.

When clothed in His brightness transported I rise,

To meet Him in clouds of the sky,

His perfect salvation, His wonderful love,

I'll shout with the millions on high.[1]

Turn Fanny Crosby's beautiful old hymn into a prayer today, saying, "Lord Jesus, you hide my soul in the cleft of the rock; and you, Savior, are that Rock! You hide my life in the depths of your love. You cover me with your hand." Today, open a hymnal and enjoy using the words of several timeless hymns as prayers of praise and thanksgiving.

Thank you, Lord God, for the Psalms. You have provided these wonderful scriptures to help stabilize my feelings when I feel overwhelmed. Thank you, especially, for Psalm 27.
